The Great Rat Race

tells the story of how the rat became the first of the twelve amongst the twelve of the Chinese zodiac. Passed through generations of Chinese children, this traditional story has now been adopted to provide a unique introduction to learning both Chinese and English. The text runs in five parallel scripts: English, simplified character Chinese, full-form character Chinese and romanisations in Mandarin and Cantonese. This enables children to see not only how each language is written, but to relate written and spoken characters to each other.
